In 1996 was appointed Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration and Head of the President’s Chief Audit Department. In 1997 became First Deputy to the Finance Minister. In 2000–2011 Alexei Kudrin was a Deputy Prime Minister and the Minister of Finance of the Russian Federation.
In early 1990s joined the Leningrad City Government. Headed the Leningrad Free Trade Zone Committee, the Committee for Economic Development and the Chief Directorate of Finance of the City Council of St. Petersburg. In 1993–96 was Deputy to the Mayor and Head of the Committee for Economy and Finance.
Graduated from the Leningrad State University with a degree in Economics. Worked at the USSR Academy Institute for Social and Economic Studies. Holds a PhD degree in Economics, research publications include 15 books and articles on economy and finance.
