Governor, Central Bank of Turkey (1996–2001)
Gazi Ercel served as Governor of the Turkish Central Bank from 1996 until 2001. In 2003, he established and chaired a financial advisory firm, Ercel Global Advisory. He also lectures at Istanbul Aydin University.
Mr Ercel held several executive positions in the private sector in Istanbul during 1989-95. In 1987-89, he served as the Director General of the Turkish Treasury in charge of International Economic Development. Over 1982-86, he worked for the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Washington DC as the Assistant to the Executive Director.
Mr Ercel started his career in 1967 as a Bank Examiner in the Finance Ministry. During 1977-82, he was the Deputy Director General of the Treasury in charge of the Foreign Exchange, Banking Supervision, World Bank and Research departments.
Mr Ercel received his undergraduate degree from Ankara University’s Faculty of Political Science and holds a master’s degree in international economics from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee (US).
